Hampton Ave. – Toronto Riverdale Contemporary Bathroom
Project Details
Location: RIverdale Toronto
Type: Contemporary Ensuite Bathroom
Features:
Plumbing design challenges were addressed by tying into the lower portion of the plumbing stack, and creating integrated bulk heads and columns in the kitchen below. This allowed for the plumbing drains through joists, and items in the bathroom to be installed without the use of platforms
Structural elements in the floor, along with space issues in the bathroom, were addressed by sistering the floor joists and rebuilding the bedroom closet walls. These improvements allowed for a significantly larger stand up shower and platform soaker tub
A side-by-side shower and tub were built to make maximum use of the space by waterproofing the interconnected elements and by using a solid surface quartz material
Project Overview:
The object for this project involved creating a contemporary full bathroom with the comforts of spacious showering, grooming, and bathing, while emphasizing natural light from the window and skylight through white wall tile and quartz surfaces.
The design challenges for this bathroom dealt mainly with structure, and the existence of limitations with this older home’s plumbing. Moreover, this particular room in the house was not the location of the original bathroom. The existing plumbing was as well improperly installed (running above floor joists), and they were compromised. The location and size of the window posed restrictions on layout as well.
The most notable feature of this bathroom is the side-by-side tub and shower with fully tiled ceiling to floor white elongated subway wall tiles, and quartz integrated surfaces. The bathroom floor also contrasts nicely and is fitted with an uncoupling membrane containing a programmable heated cable. Lastly, the recreation of the home’s existing trimwork, especially the casing and header of the newly sized window, add some detail to the otherwise contemporary space.
