After the Ice: Restoring Our Cottage Property with Help from Hillock Tree Care

The Storm That Changed the Landscape

In March 2025, an unexpected ice storm swept through Ontario, and our cottage property in Black Bank, just south of Creemore, was hit hard. What followed was one of the most dramatic transformations we’ve experienced on the land. Over 100 trees came down — some snapped at the base with roots and all, others stripped of limbs or dangerously leaning. The entire property was torn apart.

It was difficult to know where to begin — and that’s when Hillock Tree Care stepped in.

Cleanup, Restoration & Professional Tree Management

From the moment their crew arrived, it was clear we were in good hands. Hillock’s team handled the entire cleanup process — safely removing hazardous trees, clearing debris, and grinding stumps. They salvaged what they could and left the site safer, healthier, and far more open.

What impressed us most was the level of care and coordination. These weren’t rushed removals — they were thoughtful, skilled interventions done with the long-term condition of the property in mind.

Support Beyond the Chainsaw: Permits and Tree Protection

In addition to storm cleanup, Hillock Tree Care plays a vital role in supporting many of our renovation and construction projects. Municipal regulations often require arborist involvement, especially when building near mature trees. Hillock provides certified arborist reports and helps clients navigate the permit process when tree removal or major pruning is involved.

They also assist with setting up Tree Protection Zones (TPZs), which are required during construction to preserve root systems and canopy health. On multiple occasions, their expertise has helped prevent costly delays on permits and inspections.

Why Tree Care Matters — Even When There Isn’t a Storm

This experience was a clear reminder that proactive tree maintenance isn’t just about appearances — it’s about safety, longevity, and being prepared for the unexpected. Trees that are pruned regularly and assessed by professionals stand a better chance during storms, help protect nearby structures, and stay healthier over time.

Looking Ahead

Now that the land has been cleaned and stabilized, we’re getting back to normal at the cottage. The open space feels fresh, and the danger has been cleared. It’s not what it once was, but it’s a new version of the landscape — one we can work with and care for moving forward.

We continue to recommend Hillock Tree Care to our clients who need dependable, experienced tree professionals — whether it’s for emergency response, permit compliance, or ongoing landscape preservation.
